A New Standard for Corporate-Startup Collaboration

Enterprise Readiness Level. Beyond Technology Maturity.

ERL is Novable's multi-dimensional framework for assessing whether a startup is operationally ready to engage, deploy, and scale with a large corporate partner.

The Missing Measure

Technology can be mature while the company is not ready.

The Enterprise Readiness Level is a multi-dimensional maturity framework that assesses whether an innovative company is operationally ready to engage productively with a large corporate partner.

It complements TRL by evaluating the entity behind the technology: its compliance posture, traction, support capacity, documentation, and ability to sustain enterprise deployment.

TRL

Is the technology mature?

ERL

Is the organisation ready to deploy with an enterprise?

High TRL with low ERL is common, and creates the conditions for promising pilots to stall before deployment.
A Shared Language

Five levels from concept to enterprise scale

ERL gives innovation, procurement, IT, and startup teams a consistent way to describe readiness and match the depth of engagement to actual maturity.

ERL 1

Concept

An articulated value proposition without a deployable product or demonstrated commercial traction.

ERL 2

Prototype

A working product exists, while operational and compliance infrastructure remains nascent.

ERL 3

Early Commercial

Initial customers and revenue are present, but enterprise operations and compliance are still limited.

ERL 4

Venture-Client Ready

The company can enter a structured corporate pilot with adequate compliance, references, documentation, and support.

ERL 5

Enterprise Scalable

The company is equipped for large-scale deployment with relevant certifications, enterprise references, SLAs, and delivery capacity.

The Framework

Six weighted dimensions of enterprise readiness

ERL looks beyond product maturity to the observable conditions that determine whether a corporate collaboration can move from interest to sustained deployment.

10%

Identity

Legal existence, web presence, and contact channels establish that the entity can be confidently identified and contracted.

20%

Product

Evidence of a deployable, documented, and integrable solution, including product and API documentation.

15%

Technical

Architecture signals relevant to enterprise integration, from authentication standards to a live deployed product.

20%

Security & Compliance

GDPR posture, DPAs, SOC 2 or ISO 27001, SSO or SAML, and a visible security practice.

15%

Traction

Named customers, enterprise case studies, partner ecosystems, and marketplace listings provide commercial validation.

20%

Operations

Customer success, support, SLAs, implementation services, onboarding, and training indicate deployment capacity.

From Signal to Evidence

Three depths of readiness assessment

The framework combines speed and consistency with deeper review when the decision requires it.

01

ERL Estimate

A fast, signal-based estimate generated primarily from publicly observable digital evidence.

02

ERL Assessment

Human expertise layered onto the automated score through structured evidence review and commentary.

03

ERL Certification

A formal, auditable designation designed to support enterprise procurement and collaboration.

A standard must earn trust through transparency.

Novable developed ERL iteratively through direct observation and interviews with innovation professionals, procurement specialists, and startup operators.

A research collaboration with UCLouvain is examining signal validity, dimensional calibration, inter-rater reliability, and predictive validity. The aim is scientific grounding, not validation by assertion.

The ERL working paper, including its theoretical foundations, scoring methodology, and proposed research agenda, is available from Novable on request.

Common Questions

Enterprise Readiness Level, explained

Core answers for teams evaluating or preparing innovative companies for enterprise collaboration.

Does ERL replace Technology Readiness Level (TRL)?+

No. TRL evaluates whether a technology works and how mature it is. ERL evaluates whether the organisation behind that technology is operationally ready to work with a large corporate partner.

How is an ERL score calculated?+

The current ERL signal catalogue uses 41 observable signals across six weighted dimensions. Signals are aggregated into a composite score, mapped to one of five levels, and accompanied by a confidence score.

Is ERL based only on self-reported information?+

No. The first assessment level is designed primarily around publicly observable digital evidence. Deeper assessment and certification layers add structured expert review and auditable evidence.

Who can use the framework?+

ERL is designed for startups, scale-ups, SMEs, and research spin-offs, as well as the corporate innovation, venture-client, procurement, IT, and partnership teams evaluating them.
